Why the flight home needs planning
Major surgery and air travel each raise the risk of a blood clot, and a clot can be life-threatening.[NHS] The CDC adds that flying soon after surgery exposes you to changes in cabin pressure, which is why it advises a longer wait after major operations, particularly on the chest.[CDC]
A clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis, DVT) can travel to the lungs, which is called a pulmonary embolism.[NHS] The NHS also notes that after surgery a clot can form weeks later, so the risk does not end when you land.[NHS]

These are the NHS’s descriptions. They apply in Türkiye, on the journey, and for weeks after you are home.
Emergency
Call an ambulance or go to an emergency department

- Your heart is beating very fast[NHS]
- Pain and swelling in a leg together with shortness of breath or chest pain[NHS]
In Türkiye the emergency number is 112.[112] In the UK it is 999. Do not drive yourself: ask someone to drive you, or call an ambulance.[NHS]
Same day
Get an urgent medical assessment the same day
- Difficulty breathing that comes on suddenly[NHS]
- Throbbing pain in one leg (rarely both), usually in the calf or thigh[NHS]

- Red, blue or darkened skin around the painful area — harder to see on brown or black skin[NHS]

Recovery
Rest, not a holiday
The recovery days in Türkiye are for resting. The NHS says a holiday straight after surgery is unrealistic and raises the risk of things going wrong: no alcohol, no lying in the sun, no sightseeing and no swimming.[NHS] If you want to see the country, BAAPS suggests taking the holiday before the treatment, not after.[BAAPS]
Practical
Planning the return
- Book accommodation that covers your surgeon’s recommended stay, and know where you will stay immediately after the procedure.[CDC]
- Buy a return ticket you can change, in case you are told to wait longer.
- Ask your surgeon whether you need anything to prevent clots. After surgery, the NHS notes some patients are given medicine or compression stockings, sometimes continuing after they leave hospital.[NHS]
- Carry your medicines in their original packaging with copies of your prescriptions.[CDC]
- Get copies of all your medical records from the facility before you fly home.[CDC]
