Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) removes breast tissue, fat and skin, then reshapes and raises the breast to a smaller, more proportionate size. Many women considering it are not seeking a cosmetic change alone: they want relief from neck, shoulder and back discomfort, bra-strap grooves, rashes beneath the breasts and difficulty exercising.
Published studies consistently report improved quality of life after breast reduction. The operation also involves long scars, possible changes to nipple sensation and, depending on technique, an effect on future breastfeeding. For international patients, the practical questions are how much tissue will be removed, which technique protects what matters to you, and how wounds will be cared for after the flight home.
What a Breast Reduction Aims to Achieve
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes the procedure as removing skin and tissue, then reshaping and elevating the breast. Reasons patients give include:
- back, neck and shoulder pain linked to breast weight
- painful bra straps and shoulder grooves
- skin irritation and rashes in the breast fold
- difficulty exercising and finding clothes that fit
- self-consciousness about breast size
A reduction also lifts the breast, so a separate lift is not usually needed. For men with enlarged breast tissue, see gynecomastia surgery.
What the Evidence Shows About Quality of Life
A 2023 meta-analysis of studies using the BREAST-Q questionnaire found that psychosocial, physical and sexual well-being scores all rose significantly after breast reduction. Satisfaction with the breasts showed the largest change, with the pooled score rising from 22.9 before surgery to 73.0 after. Before surgery, patients scored below population norms; afterwards, their scores were comparable to the healthy population.
The improvement did not depend on how much tissue was removed. That matters when choosing a size: a smaller reduction that keeps proportion and blood supply may bring as much benefit as a larger one.
Techniques: Incisions and the Nipple's Blood Supply
Two choices define a breast reduction: the skin incision pattern, and the "pedicle" — the bridge of tissue left attached to the nipple to keep its blood supply and, in many cases, its nerves and milk ducts.
| Choice | Options | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Incision pattern | Vertical ("lollipop") or anchor (inverted-T) | Anchor patterns remove more skin with a longer scar along the breast fold |
| Pedicle | Different designs keep tissue attached from below, above or the side | Affects shape, nipple sensation and breastfeeding potential |
| Free nipple graft | Nipple removed and replaced as a graft | Sometimes used for very large reductions; sensation and breastfeeding are usually lost |
| Liposuction-only reduction | Fat removed without skin excision | Only for selected patients with fatty breasts and good skin |
Breastfeeding After Breast Reduction
A systematic review of 51 studies found that the chance of breastfeeding afterwards depended mainly on whether the column of breast tissue beneath the nipple was preserved. Median breastfeeding success was 100% for techniques with full preservation, 75% with partial preservation and 4% where it was not preserved. The authors recommended that women be told before surgery whether this tissue will be kept.
If you may want to breastfeed in future, say so at the start and ask your surgeon which technique they plan and how it affects this.
Is a Breast Reduction Suitable for You?
- symptoms linked to breast size, such as pain, grooves or rashes
- a stable weight — weight loss after surgery can change breast size and shape
- no smoking: in a US database study of 5,909 reductions, tobacco use was linked to higher complication odds
- general health assessed: the same study found older age, obesity and a higher anaesthesia risk class were associated with more complications
- breast health checked: ask whether imaging is advised before surgery for your age and family history
What Can Change After the Examination
- the planned size may be adjusted to protect blood supply or keep proportion with your frame
- the incision pattern may change from vertical to anchor if more skin must be removed
- a free nipple graft may be discussed for very large breasts
- surgery may be delayed for weight, blood tests or smoking cessation

The UK and US figures are published by each country's own national body; the Türkiye range is the one recorded on this site from Turkish providers. Nothing is converted between currencies, and the US figure is a surgeon fee that excludes anaesthesia and the operating room — so the real US total is higher than shown.

Surgeons Offering Breast Reduction in Turkey
These surgeons list breast reduction on their own website, a hospital staff page or our register. Order reflects profile completeness, not merit.
Choosing a Surgeon for a Breast Reduction
- Plastic surgery specialist who performs reductions regularly, including large reductions if relevant to you
- Discussion of technique in terms of shape, sensation and breastfeeding, not only size
- Risk review: smoking, weight and health conditions addressed before booking
- Photographs of patients with a similar starting size, showing scars at six months or later
- Aftercare for delayed wound healing, which often shows up after patients have flown home
Choosing a Hospital for a Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia, usually with an overnight stay. Choose a hospital with an anaesthetist, overnight nursing and pathology services if tissue will be examined. Facilities treating international patients should hold a health tourism authorisation and appear on the HealthTürkiye certified provider list.
29 hospitals and clinics list breast reduction.
Before-and-After Photos
Compare photographs with a similar starting size and body shape, taken from the front and side in the same pose. Look at the scar along the breast fold, nipple position and symmetry, and the side of the chest. Results are judged after several months, once swelling has settled and scars have begun to fade.

BeforeAfterRecovery After Breast Reduction
| Period | What is typical | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| First days | Soreness, swelling, possibly drains; surgical bra | Short walks; no lifting |
| First one to two weeks | Wound checks and dressing changes | Stay for review before flying |
| Weeks two to six | Gradual return to activity; small wound openings at the T-junction can occur | Keep dressings and follow wound advice at home |
| Months three to six | Swelling settles and shape softens | Scar care as advised |
Risks and Safety Considerations
Risks include delayed wound healing (particularly where incisions meet beneath the breast), thick or wide scars, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, fat necrosis, bleeding, infection and, uncommonly, partial or full loss of the nipple and areola. In the large US database study, patients aged 65 or older, tobacco users, those with obesity and those in a higher anaesthesia risk class had higher 30-day complication rates; the authors advised addressing modifiable factors such as smoking and weight before surgery.
How Long to Stay in Turkey
Patients commonly plan around 7–10 days in Turkey after breast reduction, including one night in hospital. This allows drains, dressings and early wound healing to be reviewed before a long flight. Ask about clot prevention for the journey and avoid lifting heavy luggage.
What to Send for a Preliminary Assessment
- age, height, weight, current bra size and the size you hope for
- symptoms: pain, grooves, rashes, activity limits
- pregnancy and breastfeeding plans, medical conditions, medication and smoking status

Frequently asked questions
What is breast reduction surgery?+
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and more proportionate to the body. The nipple and areola are usually moved higher and the areola may be made smaller, so the breasts are also lifted and reshaped. Many patients seek it to relieve physical symptoms caused by heavy breasts, while others want the change mainly for appearance or clothing fit. Most techniques keep the nipple attached to a section of breast tissue that carries its blood supply, which influences how much tissue can safely be removed.
Who is a good candidate for breast reduction?+
Good candidates are generally people whose large breasts cause physical symptoms or significant limitations, who are in good health and whose weight is stable. Common symptoms include neck, shoulder or upper back pain, grooves from bra straps, rashes or infections under the breast fold, and difficulty exercising. Being close to a stable weight matters because later weight change alters breast size. Smoking increases wound complications, so surgeons usually require stopping beforehand. Depending on age and family history, breast imaging may be recommended first. You can find surgeons who list breast reduction for an assessment.
Can I choose my cup size after breast reduction?+
You can discuss a target size, but surgeons cannot guarantee a specific cup size after breast reduction. Cup sizes vary between bra brands, and the final size depends on your chest width, how much tissue can be removed while keeping the nipple's blood supply safe, and how swelling settles. Surgeons usually estimate the amount of tissue to remove from each breast and aim for a size proportionate to your frame. Asking to be very small can increase the risk of complications in some techniques. Bring photos of sizes you like and explain your priorities, such as comfort, shape or activity.
What breast reduction techniques are used and what scars do they leave?+
The most common breast reduction patterns are the vertical, or lollipop, technique and the anchor, or Wise-pattern, technique. The vertical technique leaves a scar around the areola and down to the breast fold, while the anchor pattern adds a horizontal scar in the fold and is often used for larger reductions. For very large breasts, surgeons sometimes remove the nipple and replace it as a graft, which means losing nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed. In selected patients whose breasts are mostly fatty, liposuction alone may reduce size with minimal scarring but little lift.
Will breast reduction relieve my back and neck pain?+
Many patients report less neck, shoulder and back pain after breast reduction, along with fewer skin problems and easier exercise, but relief cannot be guaranteed. Pain can also come from posture, spinal conditions or other causes that surgery will not change, so a doctor may recommend evaluating these first. Results tend to be better when symptoms clearly relate to breast weight and when weight is stable. Keep a record of your symptoms, treatments already tried and how they affect daily life, as this helps the surgeon assess whether reduction is likely to help you.
Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?+
Some women can breastfeed after breast reduction, but the operation may reduce milk supply and no surgeon can guarantee it will be possible. The chance depends on how much tissue is removed and whether the nipple remains attached to the milk ducts beneath it. Techniques that detach the nipple as a free graft prevent breastfeeding. If you want to breastfeed in the future, tell your surgeon before deciding on a technique, and consider whether to delay surgery. Pregnancy can also enlarge the breasts again after reduction and change the result.
What are the risks of breast reduction?+
Breast reduction risks include prominent or widened scars, delayed wound healing, especially where incisions meet in the breast fold, and changes in nipple or skin sensation, which can be permanent. Other complications include asymmetry in size or nipple position, firm lumps from fat necrosis, fluid or blood collections, infection, reduced ability to breastfeed and, rarely, partial or total loss of the nipple and areola. As with other longer operations, blood clots are a risk. Smoking, diabetes and high body weight increase several of these risks, so be open about your health.
What is recovery like after breast reduction?+
Most patients stay one night in hospital after breast reduction and return to light activities and desk work within about 7–10 days. Some surgeons place drains that are removed within a day or two. A supportive bra is usually worn for several weeks, and lifting, reaching overhead and strenuous exercise are avoided for a period set by the surgeon. Swelling and firmness settle over weeks, and the breasts take roughly three to six months to reach their final shape. Scars continue maturing for about a year or more.
How long should I stay in Turkey after breast reduction, and what should I take home?+
Plan around 7–10 days in Turkey after breast reduction so the surgeon can check your wounds and any drains have been removed before you fly. Breast tissue removed during reduction is often sent to a pathology laboratory, so ask how and when you will receive the pathology report after returning home. Also take your operation notes, the amount of tissue removed from each side, and wound-care instructions. Arrange help with luggage and move around regularly during the flight to reduce clot risk. Our guide to complications after returning home explains warning signs.
What affects the cost of breast reduction in Turkey?+
The cost of breast reduction in Turkey depends on the amount of tissue removed, the technique, the operating time, the surgeon's fee, the hospital and anaesthesia. Additional liposuction, the number of hospital nights, drains, pathology testing, support bras, pre-operative blood tests or imaging, medication and follow-up visits may or may not be included. Health insurance at home rarely covers treatment abroad, so check before assuming reimbursement. Ask for an itemised written quote and clarify the costs if wound-healing problems need treatment.
