Plastic surgery in Istanbul is delivered through three kinds of provider, often in combination:

• Private hospital groups and independent private hospitals, where surgeons operate under general anaesthesia with inpatient beds and, in many hospitals, intensive care.
• University and state training hospitals, which carry out reconstructive and complex surgery and train surgeons; cosmetic operations are less commonly arranged there for international patients.
• Surgeons' own practices and clinics, where consultations and follow-up happen; the operation itself usually takes place in a hospital the surgeon works with.

International patients often meet a surgeon at a practice in one district and are operated on in a hospital in another. Make sure you know both addresses before you book travel.

When comparing Istanbul facilities, check the same essentials you would anywhere in Turkey — health tourism authorisation, listing on HealthTürkiye, the anaesthesia team and overnight monitoring — and add two local questions:

• Is the operating hospital the same place as the consultation? If not, how will you get between them after surgery?
• Where are post-operative checks held? A dressing change in a different district can mean a long trip across the city in your first days.

Istanbul's size means you can usually find more than one surgeon who regularly performs your operation. Shortlist on specialist training, experience with your specific procedure, the quality of the consultation and the aftercare plan — then compare quotes that describe the same operation.

Istanbul prices broadly track the Turkish market for each procedure: the national procedure guides give price observations and explain what drives them. Within the city, costs vary for reasons that are partly local.

• Ask each provider for a written plan and quote for the same operation so you are comparing like with like.
• Confirm the operating surgeon's name and specialty and the hospital where the operation will happen.
• Check the facility on the HealthTürkiye certified provider list.
• Ask how many days they expect you to stay in Istanbul and why.
• Ask who you contact out of hours, in which language, and who sees you if a problem appears after you fly home.
• Compare results in patients similar to you, not the best photographs on a website.

Plastic surgery providers operate on both sides of the Bosphorus. The practical rule is simple: stay close to the hospital or clinic where your early checks will be held, not close to sights you would like to see. In the first days after surgery you may need to return for a dressing change, drain removal or a review, and a long transfer through traffic is uncomfortable and tiring.

If your surgeon works on the Asian side, Sabiha Gökçen Airport may be closer; for providers on the European side, Istanbul Airport often is. Your provider can tell you which airport and which neighbourhood make the most sense for their location.

Many international patient services arrange private transfers. If you arrange your own, allow generous time: journey times in Istanbul change sharply with traffic, and you should not be rushing to a flight or an appointment in the days after surgery.

• a lift, and no long flights of stairs or steep streets to reach the entrance
• a short, predictable journey to your hospital or clinic
• a quiet room with space for a companion and for resting upright
• easy access to simple food and drinking water
• a bathroom you can use safely while sore or wearing a compression garment

Avoid saunas, steam rooms and the traditional hammam, as well as swimming pools and the sea, until your surgeon confirms your wounds have healed.

Before you fly home from Istanbul, make sure you have been reviewed by your surgeon or their team, and that you leave with:

• your operation notes and discharge summary
• implant or device details, where relevant
• written instructions on dressings, garments, stitches and medication
• the date and method of your next review — video call, photographs or an in-person visit
• a named contact for problems after you return, and advice on when to seek urgent local care
