A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen and, in many patients, tightens abdominal muscles that have separated after pregnancy or weight change. Many patients consider it after having children or losing a significant amount of weight.
It is also one of the more demanding cosmetic operations to recover from, especially when you are far from home. The type of tummy tuck you need, whether the muscles are repaired, your blood-clot risk and how long you must stay before flying all affect safety and cost. What a Tummy Tuck Corrects
A tummy tuck addresses problems that diet and exercise usually cannot fix:
- Loose or overhanging skin below the navel, often with stretch marks
- Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), where the two vertical muscles have moved apart and the abdomen bulges even when you are slim
- Localised fat in the lower abdomen, usually reduced at the same time
- Some umbilical hernias, which may be repaired during the operation
It does not produce weight loss, and stretch marks are only removed where the skin carrying them is cut away.

Many patients ask for a mini tummy tuck because of the shorter scar; many who have had children need a full abdominoplasty for a flatter abdomen. A surgeon's examination settles this. Patients with loose skin around the whole trunk after major weight loss may need a body lift instead.

Is a Tummy Tuck Suitable for You?
- Stable weight. Surgeons generally prefer patients near a weight they can maintain; significant later weight change alters the result.
- Finished having children. Pregnancy can stretch the skin and separate repaired muscles again.
- Non-smoker. Nicotine increases wound-healing problems at the central part of the scar; most surgeons require stopping well before and after surgery.
- Health conditions. Diabetes, high body mass index, previous blood clots and heart or lung problems increase complication risk and need assessment.
- Previous abdominal surgery. Caesarean, gall bladder or hernia scars can affect blood supply and planning.

Muscle Repair and the Navel
When the abdominal muscles have separated, the surgeon stitches their covering (the rectus sheath) together down the midline — a step called plication. This narrows the waist and flattens a bulge that exercise alone usually cannot correct. It also makes early recovery more uncomfortable, because the repaired muscles are under tension when you sit up or strain.
In a full tummy tuck the navel stays attached to its stalk; the surrounding skin is pulled down and a new opening is made so the navel sits in a natural position. Its final shape is one of the details worth looking at in before-and-after photographs.

In September 2026, providers in Turkey most commonly advertised a full tummy tuck at about €3,300–€6,500, with accredited hospital groups, and packages that included anaesthesia, hospital nights and a garment, tending toward the upper part of that range. Mini tummy tucks were typically advertised at about €2,800–€5,200. Extended abdominoplasty, combined liposuction and post-weight-loss surgery were priced higher.

What a Tummy Tuck Package in Turkey May Include
Depending on the clinic and quotation, packages may include pre-operative tests, the operation with anaesthesia, one or two hospital nights, an abdominal binder or compression garment, medication, drain removal and wound checks, hotel nights, transfers and an interpreter. Given the longer recovery, check carefully how many hotel nights are included and what an extra night costs.

Choosing a Surgeon for a Tummy Tuck
- Plastic surgery specialist with regular abdominoplasty experience, including muscle repair.
- A candid view on type. The surgeon should explain why you need a mini, full or extended operation, with the scar that comes with it.
- Clot and wound risk assessment. Ask how your personal blood-clot risk is scored and what prevention you will receive.
- Scar placement. Ask to see where the scar will sit relative to your underwear, and healed scars from previous patients.
- Combined surgery judgement. A surgeon should be willing to stage procedures when one long operation would add risk.

Choosing a Hospital for a Tummy Tuck
A full tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia and usually involves at least one night in hospital. Choose a hospital with a specialist anaesthetist, overnight nursing, clot-prevention protocols and the ability to treat bleeding promptly. Facilities treating international patients should hold a health tourism authorisation and appear on the HealthTürkiye list; under the 2025 regulation they must also carry complication insurance for operating-room procedures.

Before-and-After Photos
Look for patients with a similar starting point: skin laxity, previous pregnancies, weight and muscle separation. Check scar height and length, navel shape and the side view, which shows whether a bulge from muscle separation was corrected. Useful photographs are taken at least six months after surgery, when swelling has settled.

Risks and Safety Considerations
Abdominoplasty carries real risks that deserve a direct conversation:
- Seroma — a collection of fluid under the skin, the most common local complication after abdominoplasty, sometimes needing drainage in clinic
- Wound-healing problems at the centre of the scar, more likely with smoking, diabetes or high body weight
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs — in large registries, abdominoplasty is the cosmetic operation most often associated with venous thromboembolism; one analysis found age over 40 and a body mass index over 25 to be predictors
- bleeding, infection, numbness of the lower abdomen, poor or widened scarring, asymmetry, excess skin at the ends of the scar and changes in navel appearance

How Long to Stay in Turkey After a Tummy Tuck
Patients commonly plan around 10–14 days in Turkey after a full tummy tuck, and longer after extended or combined surgery. This allows drain removal, wound checks and assessment for seroma before a long flight. Your surgeon decides when travel is appropriate. For the journey, ask about compression stockings and any medication, choose an aisle seat, walk regularly, drink water, and arrange help with luggage.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tightens the remaining skin to create a flatter contour. In many patients, the surgeon also repairs separated abdominal muscles, a condition known as diastasis recti. During a full tummy tuck, the belly button is usually brought through a new opening in the tightened skin. The procedure is commonly considered after pregnancy or significant weight loss. It is not a weight-loss operation, and it does not remove stretch marks above the area of skin that is removed.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?+
Good candidates usually have loose abdominal skin, a lower-abdominal overhang or separated abdominal muscles, and are in good health at a stable weight. Many surgeons recommend waiting until you have finished having children, because pregnancy can stretch the skin and muscles again. What is the difference between a full, mini and extended tummy tuck?+

A mini tummy tuck treats only a small amount of loose skin below the belly button with a shorter scar and usually no new belly button scar. An extended tummy tuck continues around the flanks for patients with more skin excess. After major weight loss, a vertical incision may also be needed. Liposuction is sometimes combined to refine the waist.
Can a tummy tuck fix diastasis recti?+
A tummy tuck can repair diastasis recti by stitching the separated rectus abdominis muscles closer together, a step called muscle plication. This can tighten the abdominal wall and improve a bulging stomach that persists despite weight loss or exercise. Diastasis is different from a hernia, although some patients have both, and a hernia may need to be assessed or repaired as part of the plan. Pregnancy after repair can cause the muscles to separate again. Your surgeon may examine the abdomen, and sometimes request imaging, to confirm what is causing the bulge.
Where is the tummy tuck scar and will it fade?+
A full tummy tuck scar usually runs low across the lower abdomen from hip to hip and is often planned to sit within underwear or swimwear. There is usually also a scar around the belly button. The scar length depends on how much skin is removed. Scars are permanent and often look red or raised at first before gradually becoming flatter and paler over 12–18 months. Tension, genetics, smoking and wound healing affect scar quality. Bring examples of underwear or swimwear you like so the surgeon can discuss scar placement.
Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?+
Pregnancy is generally possible after a tummy tuck, but it may reduce or reverse part of the result. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and can separate the repaired abdominal muscles again, which may lead some patients to consider further surgery later. For this reason, many surgeons recommend waiting until you are sure you have completed your family. If you become pregnant after a tummy tuck, tell your obstetric team about your operation.
