What is Body Lift?

After large weight loss, skin laxity typically extends right around the body rather than sitting in one place. A lower body lift addresses that with a circumferential excision — essentially a tummy tuck continued around the sides and back. This is substantially bigger surgery than a tummy tuck alone: longer operating time, a longer scar that encircles the body, a longer recovery, and a higher rate of complications such as fluid collections and wound healing problems. Because of that, careful medical work-up matters, including nutritional status, which is frequently affected after bariatric surgery and directly influences healing.

Cost in Turkey

What affects price

Price varies with the extent of the lift, operating time, length of hospital stay, and whether procedures are combined or staged.

04

Types & techniques

These are variants of the same operation, not a ranking. Which one suits you is a surgical judgement made after examination — the differences below are what that conversation is about.

  • Lower body lift (belt lipectomy)

A circumferential excision around the lower torso, lifting the abdomen, outer thighs and buttocks together.

  • Staged body contouring

Splitting the work across separate operations, which reduces the risk of any single procedure but requires more than one recovery.

  • Upper body lift

Addresses the back and chest, sometimes performed as a separate stage.

  • Combined with autologous buttock augmentation

Tissue that would otherwise be discarded is used to add buttock volume rather than removing it entirely.

05

Who may be suitable

May be suitable

  • People with circumferential skin excess after major weight loss
  • Those whose weight has been stable for a sustained period, commonly around a year
  • People in good general health with adequate nutritional status
  • Non-smokers, or those who have stopped well in advance

May not be suitable

  • People still losing weight significantly
  • Those with nutritional deficiencies that have not been corrected
  • Smokers, given the substantially raised risk of wound healing failure
  • People with uncontrolled medical conditions or limited support at home during recovery

Medical assessment required: Nutritional assessment is particularly important after bariatric surgery, since deficiencies directly affect wound healing. Suitability can only be confirmed by a qualified surgeon who has examined you in person and reviewed your medical history.

Recovery timeline

Stages
4
Begins
Days 1–4
Final stage
6–12 months
  1. Days 1–4

    Stage 1 of 4

Hospital stay. Drains are usual. Early assisted mobilisation is encouraged to reduce clot risk.

  2. Weeks 1–2

    Stage 2 of 4

Limited mobility, often in a bent posture initially. Compression garments worn. Drains removed as output falls.

  3. Weeks 3–6

    Stage 3 of 4

Gradual increase in activity. Most people return to desk work towards the end of this period.

  4. 6–12 months

    Stage 4 of 4

Swelling resolves, contour settles, scars continue to mature.

Typical stages, not a schedule you are held to. Healing varies with anatomy, technique and general health, and your surgeon's own aftercare instructions override anything here.

Limitations

What it cannot do, and where expectations often run ahead.

A body lift removes skin and improves contour. It is not a weight-loss operation and does not treat cellulite or build muscle.

Scarring

Where marks are left, and how they typically settle.

The scar runs circumferentially around the lower torso. It is long and permanent, though usually positioned to sit under underwear where possible.

07

Risks & complications

RiskWhat it means
Bleeding and haematomaA collection of blood under the skin, occasionally needing a further procedure to drain it.
InfectionUsually treated with antibiotics; rarely requires surgical washout.
Anaesthetic complicationsRisks specific to the anaesthetic used, which the anaesthetist should discuss with you separately.
Unsatisfactory aesthetic resultAsymmetry, over- or under-correction, or a result that does not match expectations. May require revision surgery.
Wound healing problemsCommon in circumferential surgery, particularly where the incision crosses areas of tension.
SeromaFluid collection is frequent after this operation and may need repeated drainage.
Venous thromboembolismClots in the legs or lungs. Risk is higher with long operations; preventive measures are standard.
Skin or fat necrosisLoss of tissue at the wound edge, requiring dressings or further surgery.
Prolonged numbnessExtensive sensory change across the operated area, often long-lasting.
Asymmetry and contour irregularityUneven results that may require revision.

What applies to every procedure: symptoms that need help now, flying after surgery and insurance.

Alternatives

Staged procedures — a tummy tuck first, then other areas — spread the risk across smaller operations. Liposuction alone does not address skin excess.

10

Frequently asked questions

What is a body lift?+

A body lift, often called a lower body lift or circumferential body lift, removes loose skin and some fat around the lower torso. It usually treats the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks and outer thighs in one operation, using an incision that extends around the body. As the excess skin is removed, the surgeon lifts and tightens the remaining tissue, which can improve the shape of the buttocks and upper thighs. A body lift is most often considered after massive weight loss, when loose skin extends beyond the front of the abdomen.

Who is a good candidate for a body lift?+

Good candidates usually have significant loose skin around the lower trunk after major weight loss, have maintained a stable weight for several months, and are in good general health. Adequate nutrition is important because healing requires protein, iron and vitamins, which may be affected after bariatric surgery. Smoking and nicotine should be stopped as advised. A body lift is not a weight-loss procedure, and patients who are still losing weight may need to wait. You can find surgeons who list body lift for an assessment.

What is the difference between a body lift and a tummy tuck?+

A tummy tuck mainly treats loose skin and muscle separation at the front of the abdomen, while a body lift extends around the flanks, back and buttocks. A body lift may therefore improve lower back rolls, sagging buttocks and outer thighs in ways a tummy tuck cannot. It is a larger operation, with a longer scar, longer operating time and a more demanding recovery. Patients with loose skin limited to the lower abdomen may only need a tummy tuck. Compare the options in our tummy tuck guide.

How long after bariatric surgery should I wait for a body lift?+

Many surgeons recommend waiting until your weight has stabilised after bariatric surgery, which is often around 12–18 months after the operation and sometimes longer. Weight should have remained steady for several months, and nutritional health should be checked before surgery. Operating while weight is still changing may reduce the quality or longevity of the result. Deficiencies in protein, iron or vitamins can also affect wound healing. Your bariatric team and plastic surgeon may coordinate blood tests and advice before a body lift is planned.

What scar does a body lift leave?+

A body lift leaves a long scar that usually runs around the lower torso, across the lower abdomen, over the hips and across the lower back. The scar is typically planned to sit low enough to be covered by underwear or swimwear, but its final position depends on skin tension and healing. A scar around the belly button is also common. Scars are permanent and may be red, raised or wide at first before gradually softening over 12–18 months. Ask to see healed scars from patients with a similar amount of loose skin.

What are the risks of a body lift?+

Body lift risks include seroma, wound separation, infection, bleeding, poor or widened scars, asymmetry, numbness, contour irregularities and excess skin remaining at the ends of the incision. Blood clots in the legs or lungs are a particularly important risk because the operation is long and recovery initially limits movement. Some patients need a blood transfusion. Smoking, poor nutrition, diabetes and higher body weight increase complications. Ask your surgeon how blood clot prevention, fluid collection and wound problems will be managed.

What is recovery like after a body lift?+

Recovery after a body lift is substantial. Patients often stay about two to four nights in hospital, and drains, compression garments and early walking are commonly part of care. Early movement can be uncomfortable because the incision extends around the body, and bending, lifting and twisting are limited. Many patients need around four to six weeks before returning to most normal activity. Swelling and tightness can last for months, and the final contour usually settles over roughly six to twelve months. Arrange practical help at home before surgery.

Can a body lift be combined with arm, thigh or breast surgery?+

A body lift is sometimes combined with other procedures after massive weight loss, but combining operations increases surgical time and recovery demands. Arm lifts, thigh lifts and breast surgery are often planned as separate stages, allowing safer operating times and focused recovery. The order depends on your main concerns, health and the surgeon's assessment. Some patients have a staged plan over months or years. Ask your surgeon to explain the sequence, the expected recovery for each stage and why certain procedures should or should not be combined.

How long should I stay in Turkey after a body lift?+

Patients are commonly advised to plan around 2–3 weeks in Turkey after a body lift. This allows hospital monitoring, drain removal, wound checks, assessment for seroma and improvement in mobility before flying. Long flights increase blood clot risk, so follow your surgeon's advice on compression stockings, walking, hydration and any prescribed medication. Travelling with a companion is strongly advisable because lifting and bending will be restricted. Before booking, check how complications abroad would be handled in our medical travel insurance guide.

What affects the cost of a body lift in Turkey?+

Body lift cost in Turkey depends on the extent of skin removal, whether liposuction or buttock fat transfer is added, operating time, hospital nights, anaesthesia, surgeon's fee and facility. Because it is a long operation, blood tests, drains, compression garments, medication, blood-clot prevention, follow-up visits and a longer stay in Turkey may significantly affect the total. Combining it with other post-weight-loss procedures will increase the cost and recovery. Ask for a detailed written quote and complication policy. Request a body lift consultation for an individual assessment.
