Questions about the operation and the aftermath

A systematic review of seroma after abdominoplasty is one reason the last question matters: fluid collections are a recognised complication that can appear after you have left.

A full abdominoplasty needs general anaesthesia, a specialist anaesthetist and overnight nursing. Confirm the hospital's HealthTürkiye listing and ask whether drains are removed at the hospital or the surgeon's office. The Antalya Provincial Health Directorate oversees health facilities in the province.

Plan around 10 to 14 days in Turkey after a full tummy tuck, and longer after extended or combined surgery. You will walk stooped for the first days, drains are usually removed around the end of the first week and you leave only when your surgeon is satisfied with the wound. In Antalya choose a hotel with a lift in the Muratpaşa or Lara areas close to your surgeon rather than a resort far from the hospital, and use transfers rather than walking. Sun exposure and swimming are normally off the agenda, and the NHS advises against lying in the sun or going in the water after surgery abroad.

Differences in Antalya quotes come from the type of operation, muscle repair, added liposuction, nights in hospital, clot-prevention measures, and the hotel nights and transfers a two-week stay requires, which cost more in high season.

Have in writing the surgeon's name and specialty, the type of tummy tuck and whether muscle repair and liposuction are included, the hospital's address and certification, nights in hospital, the drain plan, clot prevention, the dates for drain removal and a final review, and the deposit terms.

The NHS advises waiting 7 to 10 days after a tummy tuck before flying, and the CDC says medical tourists should not fly for 10 days after chest or abdominal surgery. Walk regularly on the flight, drink water and follow your clot-prevention plan. Seek urgent care for calf pain or swelling, chest pain or sudden breathlessness.
