Mommy Makeover in Antalya

Questions for your Antalya shortlist

• Which operations make up my plan, and which of them would you advise against combining?
• Would you do everything at once or in two stages, and what is the reason?
• Where do you operate, and how many nights would I be in hospital?
• How would you assess my risk of blood clots, and what protects me in hospital, at the hotel and on the flight?
• Who would manage a wound problem or seroma if it showed up after I had flown home?

Written answers to these make surgeons far easier to compare than a package price alone.

Combined breast and abdominal surgery needs general anaesthesia and several nights in hospital, so look for a specialist anaesthetist, overnight nursing and the means to deal with bleeding or breathing problems. A facility treating international patients should be on the HealthTürkiye certified provider list, and the Antalya Provincial Health Directorate oversees health facilities in the province. Ask whether the surgeon operates in the hospital where you will be consulted.

The first day or two go on examination, blood tests, a clot-risk assessment and markings, ideally with a day between consultation and surgery. After the operation come two to three hospital nights with drains and early walking with help. Back at the hotel, expect to stand bent forward for several days in your garments; a room with a lift close to the hospital helps. Around the end of the first week drains are usually removed and wounds reviewed, often at the hospital, so each visit needs a transfer. The second week brings more upright walking and a further wound check, and you leave only when the surgeon clears you to fly, with a clot-prevention plan and written aftercare.

These are advertised figures, not quotes, and what a package contains differs between providers.

Within Antalya, look at:

• How many operations the price covers, since each adds theatre time, and whether each is named with its technique.
• One stage or two. Splitting the surgery adds a second hospital stay and more travel; ask for the price if it is split.
• Hospital nights. Combined surgery often needs two or three; ask what an extra night costs.
• Clot prevention. Stockings, compression devices or injections, and whether they continue after discharge.
• Season. Between June and September hotels and flights cost more and fill earlier.
• Hotel nights and transfers. The stay is around two weeks, with several hospital visits for drains and checks.

Have the following in writing from whichever provider you choose. The surgeon's name and plastic surgery specialty, with confirmation that they do the whole operation. The hospital's name, address and HealthTürkiye listing. Every procedure by name, with technique, and implant details if implants are used. Whether surgery is one stage or two, and why. Hospital nights, the drain plan and clot prevention. Dates for consultation, surgery, drain removal and final review. And the deposit terms, including what happens if examination changes the plan.

Patients commonly plan around 14 days in Turkey after a mommy makeover, including two to three nights in hospital, so that drains can come out and wounds be reviewed before flying. Antalya's summer heat, sun and beaches are not part of the first weeks: you will mostly be resting, in garments, walking slowly, and sun exposure and swimming are normally off limits until your surgeon says otherwise. Choose a hotel with a lift near the hospital, take transfers rather than walking between appointments, and arrange for a companion to be with you at the start.

The flight home is part of the medical plan. The NHS advises waiting 7 to 10 days after a tummy tuck before flying, and the CDC says medical tourists should not fly for 10 days after chest or abdominal surgery; with combined surgery your surgeon may advise longer. Air travel and surgery each raise the risk of blood clots, so walk the aisle, drink water and follow your clot-prevention plan. Get urgent care for calf pain or swelling, chest pain or sudden breathlessness, in the air or after landing.
