VASER liposuction is a form of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. VASER is the brand name of a device that delivers pulsed ultrasound energy through a small probe to loosen and emulsify fat after tumescent fluid has been injected. The loosened fat is then removed with suction cannulas, as in other liposuction methods. Surgeons may use it to contour areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, arms, thighs and male chest. Like other liposuction techniques, VASER is designed for body contouring, not weight loss, and results depend on fat distribution and skin quality.

The main difference is that VASER uses ultrasound energy to break up fat before suction, while traditional liposuction removes fat mechanically. VASER liposuction shares the risks of other liposuction methods, including contour irregularities, asymmetry, bruising, numbness, infection, seroma, blood clots and anaesthesia complications. Because it uses ultrasound energy, it also carries a risk of burns or heat damage to the skin and underlying tissue. Seroma may be more likely in some patients after energy-assisted liposuction.
