Hospitals

There is no single best hospital for every patient; choose one that suits your procedure, your health and your surgeon. Start with where your chosen surgeon operates, then check the hospital's authorisation and accreditation, whether it has the monitoring and intensive care your operation could need, how its international patient office works, and what aftercare it provides. Private hospitals book patients directly and most international cosmetic surgery takes place in them, often with international patient offices. Public hospitals belong to the Ministry of Health system and book through MHRS; purely cosmetic operations are generally not covered by public health insurance. University hospitals combine treatment with teaching and research, may be public or foundation-run, and often handle reconstructive and complex surgery; a team including doctors in training may be involved in your care. Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation means a hospital has been assessed against JCI's international standards for areas such as patient safety, infection control and quality management. It is voluntary, it is granted for a limited period and has to be renewed, and it covers the organisation rather than any individual surgeon's skill. Many well-run hospitals are not JCI accredited. Turkey's Ministry of Health issues an authorisation certificate for health tourism (Uluslararası Sağlık Turizmi Yetki Belgesi) to facilities that meet its requirements, and publishes lists of authorised hospitals and clinics. Check that the hospital appears on the current list, ask to see its certificate, and confirm that the name and address match where you will be treated. It depends on the procedure, the anaesthesia, how long the operation lasts, your health and whether you will need overnight care. Operations under general anaesthesia that are long, combined or involve significant fluid shifts, such as a tummy tuck with breast surgery or a body lift, are commonly performed in hospitals with overnight monitoring. Some shorter procedures under local anaesthesia can be done in suitably equipped and licensed clinics. Serious complications after cosmetic surgery are uncommon, but some, such as major bleeding, blood clots in the lungs, fat embolism or breathing problems, may need intensive care within minutes rather than hours. A hospital with an intensive care unit on site avoids a transfer at the moment it matters most. This is especially relevant for long or combined operations, fat grafting to the buttocks, body contouring after major weight loss, and patients with heart, lung or other medical conditions. Ask whether intensive care is on site and staffed around the clock.

An international patient department usually coordinates appointments, interpreters, airport transfers, accommodation, billing and communication with your surgeon before and after treatment. It can make a trip much easier, but coordinators are not a substitute for medical advice, and questions about suitability, risks and recovery should be answered by your surgeon. Ask which services are included in your price and which cost extra, who your named contact is, and how the department supports you after you return home.

A hospital quote should be written and itemised, and it should show the surgeon's fee alongside hospital charges, as the two are often billed separately. Check that it covers the operating theatre, anaesthesia, room nights, pre-operative tests, implants or materials, medication, garments and follow-up visits, plus any transfers or accommodation offered. MHRS, the Ministry of Health's central appointment system, requires a Turkish identity number to sign in, including the identity number issued to foreign residents. Visitors without one usually need to contact the hospital's international patient unit or the hospital directly. Appointments can be made on the MHRS website or app, or by calling the Alo 182 line. Public hospitals focus on medically needed treatment, so purely cosmetic surgery is more commonly arranged in private hospitals, where patients book directly.
