Reading the Turkish range

The scope of surgery differs between offers: upper eyelids only, lower eyelids only, or both. A price for one pair of lids is not comparable with a price for all four, so the first thing to establish is which lids each quote covers.

• Ask whether the quote includes skin only, or also removal or repositioning of fat.
• Ask whether anything other than the eyelids, such as a brow lift, is included.
• The usual planning stay is 5–7 days.

What the UK and US figures show

UK figure: the NHS gives £2,000–£6,000 as the typical total private price, and that does not count consultations, follow-up care or any further surgery. US figure: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports an average surgeon fee of $3,359–$3,876, with anaesthesia, the operating room or facility, and related expenses outside it, so the real American total is higher.

What to have in writing

Before weighing eyelid surgery offers against each other, have the provider state:

• which lids are operated on, and what is removed or repositioned
• the surgeon who will operate, and whether the anaesthetic is local or general
• where the operation takes place and which check-ups fall within your stay
• the eye examination done beforehand, since the problem is not always in the lid
• what happens, and who pays, if a further procedure proves necessary after you are home
